Shares of India’s third-largest IT exporter, HCL Technologies Ltd. jumped over 7% in early trade today, pulling peers like Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.and Mphasis Ltd. along for the ride.
The immediate catalyst? A headline net profit beat for the second quarter (Q2 FY27) ended September 30, 2026, clocking in at ₹5,132 crore, a sharp 21.15% jump year-on-year. Alongside earnings, the board sweetened the deal with an interim dividend of ₹12.00 per share.
However, when a stock jumps 7% post-earnings in an otherwise cautious IT climate, it pays to look beyond the headline PAT figure and examine what truly moved the needle.
The Scorecard: Q2 FY27 at a Glance
- Revenue from Operations: ₹35,620 cr ($3,724M) | QoQ Growth: +3.01% | YoY Growth: +11.51%
- PBT (Before Exceptional Items): ₹6,467 cr | QoQ Growth: +5.88% | YoY Growth: +13.42%
- Provision for Taxes: ₹1,335 cr | QoQ Growth: -9.92% | YoY Growth: -8.94%
- Net Profit (PAT): ₹5,132 cr ($538M) | QoQ Growth: +10.94% | YoY Growth: +21.15%
- Diluted EPS: ₹18.93 ($0.20) | QoQ Growth: +10.96% | YoY Growth: +21.27%
- Interim Dividend: ₹12 per share
Note: For the dividend, the record date is October 16, 2026, and the payout date is October 26, 2026.
Where Did the Growth Come From?
HCLTech operates across three key pillars, each behaving somewhat differently this quarter:
- IT and Business Services: Generating ₹26,938 crore (up 3.4% QoQ and 13.7% YoY), this core engine provided predictable revenue execution.
- Engineering and R&D Services (ERS): Brought in ₹5,973 crore, up 5.0% QoQ, driven by revived demand in product engineering, embedded systems, and automotive tech.
- HCL Software: Came in at ₹2,709 crore, compared to ₹2,840 crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹2,826 crore in Q2 FY26. This segment is historically backend-loaded, making seasonal softness in Q2 customary before enterprise renewal cycles pick up in Q3 and Q4.
Why Did Net Profit Grow Faster Than Revenue?
While revenue grew 11.5% YoY, net profit leapt 21.1% YoY. A key reason for this divergence sits lower down the profit and loss statement: taxes.
HCLTech’s effective tax rate (ETR) contracted from 25.7% in Q2 FY26 to 20.5% in Q2 FY27. The management attributed this reduction to three primary factors:
- The company adopted India’s new corporate tax regime during the financial year.
- Tax deductions tied to capital assets from newly completed business combinations came online.
- The resolution of several historical uncertain tax positions with authorities yielded tax reversals.
This tax efficiency delivered a substantial boost directly to the bottom line, helping EPS surpass broker consensus estimates.
The M&A and AI Push
Rather than relying purely on organic hiring, HCLTech has aggressively deployed capital into specialized engineering, software IP, and artificial intelligence:
- Consummated Deals: During the quarter, the company closed the acquisition of Jaspersoft from Cloud Software Group for $239 million to bolster its embedded analytics platform, HPE’s Telco Solutions Business for $139 million to deepen 5G and AI-native telecom capabilities, and Guardian India Operations for $21 million.
- GenAI Ecosystem: HCLTech concluded a strategic transaction for an 11.34% stake in Indian foundational model developer Axonwise (Sarvam AI), alongside signing a deal to acquire Croatia-based Robotiq.ai to infuse generative agents into enterprise workflows.
The Catch
- Narrowed FY27 Guidance: HCLTech narrowed its full-year FY27 constant-currency revenue guidance band to 2.5%–4.0%, up from the earlier floor of 1.0%. While narrowing a range halfway through the fiscal year reduces variance, the revision signals that the broad environment for discretionary enterprise tech spending has stabilized rather than sharply inflected upward.
- Cash Outflows: Extensive M&A activity absorbed ₹3,742 crore ($392 million) in net acquisition payouts over the first half of the fiscal year, requiring careful capital discipline to support recurring dividend schedules.
In Closing
HCLTech’s Q2 FY27 report highlights solid execution. Core IT services remain steady, engineering verticals continue to gain traction, and proactive balance-sheet optimization via the new tax regime provided a clear earnings lift. For the market to sustain a prolonged re-rating, investors will want to verify that the capital deployed into software and AI assets begins to translate into organic top-line acceleration through the second half of the fiscal year.
