What’s Happening In India & Beyond?

  • Jio Platforms IPO continued to receive a strong response from investors with total bids crossing the 1 lakh crore mark. It is India’s largest IPO and it also became the fastest in history to reach full subscription for an issue of such magnitude.
  • NCDEX on October 22 launched two rule-based equity indices, NDEX and FINNDEX, as the exchange expands into the equity and equity derivatives segments. The indices use a multi-factor methodology that combines free-float market capitalisation, average daily traded value, beta and volatility to select stocks and determine their weights.
  • China’s stock market plunged 20% from its peak even after reporting better-than-expected growth numbers. The country’s economy grew 4.5% year-on-year in the July–September quarter, faster than 4.3% in the previous quarter, but retail sales grew just 1.1%, indicating that households are cautious about spending.
  • India is focusing on connectivity initiatives such as the International North-South Transport Corridor and the IMEC. Geopolitical tensions have challenged India’s ambitions to establish reliable connectivity with Europe. In contrast, the China-Europe freight network significantly expands trade routes across Eurasia. The expansion provides multiple routes and helps mitigate disruptions in maritime transport.
  • The Indian government has introduced new rules to facilitate the testing of telecommunication technologies in controlled environments. These rules provide exemptions from certain regulatory requirements under existing laws aimed at fostering innovation. Regulatory sandboxes will allow for trial of new services under specified conditions before commercial deployment. The government will oversee eligibility criteria and risk management measures for participants.
