What is a Demat Account?

A demat account (short for dematerialised account) is an electronic account that holds your financial securities like stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, and government securities in digital form, replacing the need for physical share certificates.

In India, all securities must be held in demat form to be traded on NSE or BSE. When you open a demat account, it is maintained by a Depository Participant (DP), in this case, PhonePe Invest, operated by PhonePe Wealth Broking Private Limited, and is registered with a central depository: CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) or NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited).

When you buy a stock, the shares are credited to your demat account. When you sell, they are debited. Settlement in India follows the T+1 cycle, i.e., the settlement of money and securities happen one business day after the transaction.

Why is a Demat Account Necessary?

A demat account is mandatory to buy, hold, or sell shares listed on Indian stock exchanges. SEBI requires all securities in India to be held in electronic (dematerialised) form. Without a demat account, you cannot invest in stocks, apply for IPOs, or hold ETFs.

Beyond regulatory compliance, a demat account offers practical advantages:

  • Protection from physical risks: Securities are stored electronically, eliminating risk of loss, theft, fire damage, or forgery of physical certificates.
  • Automatic corporate benefits: Dividends, bonus shares, and rights issues are credited directly to your account without any paperwork.
  • Faster settlement: India's T+1 settlement cycle means your shares arrive within one business day of purchase.
  • Consolidated portfolio view: Stocks, ETFs and mutual fund units are all visible in one account.

Yes. There is no restriction on the number of demat accounts you can hold in India. You can have accounts with multiple brokers simultaneously. However, each account has its own charges and requires a separate KYC. Holding multiple accounts with the same broker is not permitted.

A demat account is an electronic account that holds your financial securities like stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds in digital form. In India, all securities must be held in demat form to be traded on NSE or BSE. The account is maintained by a Depository Participant registered with CDSL or NSDL.

A demat account holds your securities in electronic form. A trading account is used to place buy and sell orders on the stock exchange. Both are required to invest in stocks in India. When you open an account with PhonePe Invest, you receive both a demat account and a trading account simultaneously.

To open a demat account, you need: (1) PAN card: mandatory for all applicants; (2) Aadhaar card: for eKYC and address proof; (3) Bank account details: a cancelled cheque or recent bank statement; (4) Income proof (salary slip or ITR): required only if you want to trade in Futures and Options. PhonePe Invest's account opening process is 100% paperless using Aadhaar-based eKYC.

A demat account on PhonePe Invest can be opened by resident Indian individuals aged 18 and above who hold a valid PAN card and an Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number. PhonePe Invest currently does not support NRI accounts, non-individual PAN holders, or joint accounts.

PhonePe Invest offers zero account opening fee and zero annual maintenance charges. Equity delivery trades are also brokerage-free. Regulatory charges like STT, SEBI turnover fee, GST, and stamp duty are government-mandated and apply to all brokers in India. See the complete schedule at phonepeinvest.com/charges.

PhonePe Invest currently does not support NRI demat accounts. The platform is available to resident Indian individuals (age 18 and above) only. PhonePe Invest's eligibility policy may be updated in the future.

A Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) is a type of demat account introduced by SEBI for investors with small portfolios. A BSDA has zero Annual Maintenance Charge for holdings up to ₹4 lakh, and a reduced AMC for holdings between ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh. You can hold only one BSDA at any point, and it must be your only demat account.

CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) and NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) are the two central depositories in India, both regulated by SEBI. They perform the same function: maintaining demat accounts and recording ownership of securities. PhonePe Invest is registered with CDSL (IN-DP-696-2022). Your broker determines which depository your account is held with.

Your shares are safe regardless of what happens to PhonePe Invest. Securities in your demat account are maintained by CDSL — an independent, SEBI-regulated entity — not by PhonePe Invest. If a broker ceases operations, clients can transfer their holdings to another Depository Participant. Your securities remain yours.

You can transfer shares between demat accounts using the Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) method or through CDSL's Easiest online portal. For transfers within CDSL, the process can be completed online. For off-market transfers (e.g., CDSL to NSDL), a physical DIS may be required. DP transaction charges apply for each debit transaction.

The minimum age to independently operate a demat account in India is 18 years. A minor (below 18) can have a demat account opened in their name, operated by a parent or guardian until they turn 18. Once the minor reaches adulthood, the account must be re-KYC'd and converted to a regular individual account.

T+1 settlement means shares bought or sold on Day T (trade date) are settled by the next business day (T+1). India implemented T+1 settlement across all listed securities in January 2023, making it one of the fastest-settling markets globally. For demat account holders, purchased shares appear in the account the day after the trade.

Under PhonePe Invest's eKYC process, your Aadhaar is linked during account opening using OTP-based verification. If you need to update Aadhaar details after account opening, you can do so through the app's profile section or by contacting PhonePe Invest support.
