What is a Reverse Stock Split?

In business, a reverse stock split happens when a company merges multiple existing shares into a single share. Think of it like holding four quarter-dollar coins. If you trade them in for a single one-dollar bill, you still have the exact same amount of money, just in a different form.

In the stock market, if a company does a 1-for-4 reverse split, four of your $5 shares automatically become one $20 share. The overall value of your investment doesn’t change. Why do companies do this? Usually to boost a sagging stock price. Many stock exchanges require shares to stay above $1 to avoid delisting, while some institutional investors aren’t allowed to buy penny stocks. A reverse split raises the per-share price instantly, though it often signals that a business is struggling.
